Replacing Sony Laptop Keyboard
Written by Jacob Hodgson
Monday, 21 July 2008

For most laptops, the process of removing and then replacing the keyboard is almost similar. Before you do anything drastic though, be careful on the following:

  • If your laptop is still actively covered by warranty, don't open the casing because you can lose the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Remember to always unplug the AC power adapter and remove the battery before you begin to open the case.
  • If you accidentally damage the keyboard connector on your motherboard in any way, you will need to replace the motherboard.
  • Keep in mind that replacing your keyboard is a very risky undertaking.

If you're ready to proceed, here are the steps in removing a Sony laptop keyboard:

  • Insert a flathead screwdriver beneath the bezel and gently lift it up. Release the latches and remove the bezel your fingertips. The bezel might be connected to your motherboard; take note that it is not necessary to disconnect this in order to replace the keyboard.
  • Remove at least three screws from your keyboard and carefully lift it up.
  • Unlock the connector before you pull the ribbon.

To install the new keyboard, you can follow the steps stated above in reverse order.

How to Deal with the "Windows Cannot Start Because the Following File is Missing or Corrupt" Error
Written by Jacob Hodgson

If you've been using a computer, whether it is a PC or a laptop, for a long time, then you might have already encountered the "Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt" error. Several error codes can be associated with this but we will concentrate on the System32\Drivers\ntfs.sys error in particular.
This error will continually occur even if you start and restart your computer. If you search for this error over the internet, you will find several tips on how to fix it. Unfortunately though, most tech site categorizes this as merely a software problem. They recommend that you should replace the corrupted files using a recovery console. However, these types of error might actually be caused by a defective memory unit.
You can test the memory of your computer to find out whether it is operating well or not. If it isn't, you should remove the memory stick and install the modules one by one into the slots found on your system board. If the error is caused by your memory module, take note that it can either be caused by the memory stick itself or the memory slot.

If the error came from the memory stick, it is a lot simpler to fix. On the other hand, if it is because of your memory slot, you need to replace the whole system board for your computer to work properly again. In conclusion, if you get the missing file error during startup, you should check your memory unit if replacing the corrupted file doesn’t fix the problem.

Troubleshoot Dead Laptop
Written by Jacob Hodgson

When you press the power button, there are no signs of life from your laptop at all. Your laptop doesn't make ordinary noises, the fan doesn’t spin, the LED lights won't show up, and the screen is completely black. These are the signs that your laptop is dead; so what can you do about it?

  1. You first need to make sure that the wall outlet is actually working. The problems might be because the laptop DC does not have a power source. Go to another wall outlet.
  2. Look at the DC power adapter to make sure that you have the right voltage. You can test the laptop DC power adapter by using a voltmeter.
  3. If the DC power adapter looks good and it has the right voltage, unplug the adapter from your laptop and remove its battery. Wait a few minutes before plugging in the power adapter and turning on your laptop again.

If you discover that the problem lies with the power adapter, you should always remember that the voltage output of the new devise should be exactly similar to your original device but the amperage of the new adapter can be higher. However, if you do the recommended steps above and the laptop still doesn’t work, the problem may lie on the motherboard or in the DC power jack.
